Sports Equipment and Facilities

Athletes of all ages are becoming increasingly at risk for infections such as *Staphylococcus aureus (Staph) and *MRSA simply from exposure to contaminated equipment. The overuse of antibiotics has allowed staph bacteria to evolve into what has become known as the Superbug. It is not just the smell of sweaty gear that may be bothersome but the underlying danger of microbial contamination that could pose serious health risks for athletes. “That smell” is caused by sweat, mucous, blood and dirt that have soaked into the equipment, a mix of proteins and organic matter that is the ideal breeding ground for the growth of bacteria and fungus. The player’s become further exposed to infection as these pathogens enter the body through cuts and abrasions leading to potentially serious infections.

The transmission rates of staph and MRSA are facilitated by close personal contact of the players and the frequent skin injuries that occur with many sporting activities. Failure to cover wounds adequately, sharing of sports equipment and towels and lack of cleanliness of shower and change room facilities also rate as contributing factors.

*Staphylococcus aureus
Staphylococcus aureus (staph) is a bacterium that is commonly found on the skin or in the nose of otherwise healthy people. When staph lives on the body without causing any problems it is referred to as colonization. Up to 30% of the population may be colonized with staph at any given time. Staph most commonly causes infections of the skin and soft tissue, most of these infections are relatively minor and include pimples, abscesses or boils. However the problem can potentially become a systemic one, thereby causing some people to become critically ill.

*MRSA
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is a type of bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics. These antibiotics include methicillin and other more common antibiotics such as oxacillin, penicillin and amoxicillin. MRSA traditionally has been a germ associated with hospitals but now is appearing in the community and is often called “community-acquired MRSA”. Community-acquired MRSA appears to be particularly good at causing skin infections, especially skin abscesses. Community-acquired MRSA appears to spread easily through contact among individuals, and outbreaks of community-acquired MRSA have occurred among members of various sports teams at the high school, college, and professional level.

I just wanted to thank you guys for the great job your company did on my car and my hockey gear.  As you know my car had 3 yrs of Hockey gear and Wet Wet dog.  My goalie gear smells brand new and my car actually has no smell at all.  It just smells clean!!!!  I can’t believe I lived with that smell for so long, what an amazing product you have....... I am going to tell all my friends.

In a couple months I am sure the gear will go bad, you will be the first I call.   As for the car, I am thinking a yearly visit would not be out of line.  Even my dog likes the new car smell!

Thanks again, I look forward to doing business with you again.  You guys do good work!!

Sincerely,

Wade Paul
